For two decades, Yara Tanzania has been part of the country’s agricultural development journey, evolving from a local fertilizer business into a broader agricultural solutions provider. Under the theme “Two Decades, Many Milestones – Establish, Expand, Innovate,” the company’s journey reflects a continued focus on supporting farmers with quality fertilizers, crop nutrition solutions, knowledge and technology.
The journey began in 2005, when the company was established in Tanzania as CHAN Mali, supporting local farming with quality fertilizers. This marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to Tanzania’s agricultural sector and the farmers who depend on it.
In 2009, an important transformation took place when the company was rebranded as Yara Tanzania, aligning its brand, purpose and farmer ambition across Tanzania. The rebranding strengthened its identity and established a foundation for further expansion.
By 2015, Yara Tanzania had expanded its operational capacity by building a 5,000+ ton fertilizer terminal. This investment improved fertilizer availability and operational excellence, strengthening the company’s ability to serve the agricultural market.
Innovation became increasingly prominent in 2020 with the introduction of MEGACOOP, described as the first blended fertilizer and a game changer in crop productivity and soil health. This represented a move beyond conventional fertilizer supply towards more targeted crop nutrition solutions.
The company’s digital transformation continued in 2022 with the launch of FarmCare, described in the timeline as Africa’s leading AfricaConnect industry-first digital crop ecosystem for growers. This initiative demonstrated Yara’s growing focus on connecting farmers with digital agricultural services and information.
In 2023, Yara Tanzania introduced premium fertilizers and product supplements, expanding its portfolio of solutions for better farming. The focus was not only on fertilizer but also on providing farmers with products designed to support improved agricultural outcomes.
Another major milestone came in 2024, when Yara Tanzania established its own Knowledge Centre. The centre provides hands-on training and local agronomic expertise, helping farmers and agricultural stakeholders gain practical knowledge. The same year also saw the launch of water-soluble fertilizers for fertigation and foliar application, providing additional options for crop feeding.
By 2025, the company had introduced new NPK blends tailored to maximize soil productivity and farmer yield. These customized solutions demonstrate an increasing emphasis on addressing specific crop and soil nutrition requirements.
Looking back across these milestones, Yara Tanzania’s 20-year journey can be viewed as a progression from establishment to expansion and innovation. From its beginnings as CHAN Mali, through the Yara Tanzania rebrand, infrastructure investments, fertilizer innovations, digital agricultural platforms, knowledge development and specialized crop nutrition products, the company has continued to broaden its contribution to agriculture.
The milestones ultimately point toward one central ambition: supporting farmers with solutions that improve productivity, strengthen soil health and contribute to better farming outcomes across Tanzania.
